In China, boyfriends are like accessories. In fact, they even carry your accessories! Think of it like a walking coat-rack. Throw on your jacket, your purse, and bam--you're ready to travel in style and with ease. Not to mention, it's a status symbol: "Look: M-I-N-E! Win!"
However, I'm not trying to point any blaming-fingers here. The men seem to love it. Rather than the "whipped" mentality we have over in America, it's "I'm a man, see my woman? I take care of her by holding her pink tassel purse as she clings to my arm, tottering in those impossibly high, sparkly heels."
So the question remains: do you match your boyfriend to your purse, or your purse to your boyfriend? Do you give him a call: "Honey, you need to wear the blue shirt today. The red will clash with my bag."
So I tease, but it's all in good fun. Although I most certainly do not understand it, what it really comes down to is 文化差异 wénhuà chāyì, or "cultural differences." That being said, you most certainly don't have to worry about me bringing home a Chinese boyfriend. I think I'm okay schlepping around my own bags for now.
Okay so two things:
ReplyDeletea) I think I need to move to China - they carry your purses and match your accessories?
c) YOU AND CAR WERE IN MY DREAM LAST NIGHT. I just realized it. It was totally random, I was walking down the street somewhere and I ran into you two and we chatted for a few minutes, and then I went on my way.
